Riparian Corridor Planning

"“Rivers.....are the natural highways of all nations, not only leveling the ground and removing obstacle from the path of the traveler.....but conducting him through the most interesting scenery, the most populous portions of the globe, where the animal and vegetable kingdoms attain their greatest perfection.”"

-Henry David Thoreau
A Week on the Concord and Merrimack Rivers
1849

Oakland County is the home to the headwaters of the six major watersheds in southeast Michigan and hundreds of miles of streams and rivers.  Stream and river corridors are critically important. They are focal points of community character, identity, history and ecology.

Each of our riparian corridors offers a special opportunity for a community to connect with its unique character.  Oakland County Planning & Economic Development Services has developed support tools for communities to engage in the conscientious planning and conservation.
