Oakland County's Green Infrastructure Visioning Project

Phase II - Determining Best Land Management Practices & Planning Tools

In addition to creating a local Green Infrastructure Vision Map, workshop participants are asked to identify the road-bounded area containing the highest priority green infrastructure elements within their community. Participants then assess the conservation threats and opportunities associated with their high-priority area, to determine best land management practices and planning tools to apply.

Road-Bounded Area Assessment Process

Road-bounded areas within each community provide a geographic framework for analyzing and assigning appropriate land management practices and planning tools that will address green infrastructure conservation goals.

Communities tap their local knowledge of existing ecological conditions and future landuse plans to determine which road-bounded areas should be prioritized for green infrastructure conservation efforts.

Questions to consider: What areas are under the most stress? What are the potential sources of those stressors? Once identified, appropriate conservation tools can be determined (see image on right).

Communities are encouraged to use their Green Infrastructure Vision maps and the above assessment process to identify priority conservation areas, determine best land management practices for remaining natural areas, and address Green Infrastructure goals through local plans and ordinances.

Community Planning for Natural Resource Protection

Examples of successful implementation of Best Land Management Practices and Conservation Tools may be accessed and submitted to the Oakland County Natural Resources Best Management Practices Inventory.
