Oakland County's Green Infrastructure Initiative
First, note that for over 30 years (2.0 mb), Oakland County's Community Planning and Consulting Group Services has working experience in natural resource identification and preservation. And, our approach is the first in the state to be based on information developed by the Michigan Natural Features Inventory. You will need to download Adobe Acrobat Reader if it is not already installed on your system.
Our Approach Phase I - Eastablish a Countywide Green Infrastructure Vision Working with the Natural Areas Advisory Group, more than 30 visioning sessions were held with local community leaders (planning commission members, community planners, volunteer citizens) representing each Oakland County community. The goal of these visioning workshops was to identify and map the community's green infrastructure elements. Workshop participants were also asked to identify the highest priority areas within their community. Participants assessed the conservation threats and opportunities associated with these areas to determine the best land management practices and conservation planning tools (118 kb) that could be applied.
Upon completing the workshop series, the individual community maps were compiled to assemble a countywide green infrastructure vision (4.5 mb), which is essential in coordinating conservation efforts in local communites and the region. Phase II - Provide Community Planning Support With the countywide vision in place, we offer analytical services to communities interested in prioritizing high-value resource areas and coordinating action with multiple interest groups working to support resource conservation. For more information about these services, please contact us. On a final note, we are working to coordinate efforts beyond Oakland County's borders by collaborating with multiple green infrastructure initiatives underway in adjacent counties.
