Oakland County's Green Infrastructure Infrastructure Program

Phase I - Mapping Green Infrastructure

Within the state of Michigan, land-use is regulated by the city, village, or township.  Therefore, local community participation is ultimately the critical element in making the vision of preserving our green infrastructure network a reality.

The Natural Areas Advisory Group is contacting local community leaders (planning commission members, community planners, volunteer citizens) to establish their partnership. Approximately four community representatives are asked to participate in a hands-on Green Infrastructure Mapping Session (visioning workshop). Here, they are provided information about the project and asked to identify their community's green infrastructure elements (hubs, sites, and links).

Oakland County's extensive digital mapping resources, including the MNFI natural area coverage, are used to guide and capture a local vision for preserving 'Our Natural Legacy'. The Oakland County Environmental Stewardship Group gathers information shared during each workshop and creates maps of the community's Vision. Individual community maps are then compiled to assemble the Countywide Green Infrastructure Vision.
