Oakland County Parks strives to provide recreational and leisure opportunities for all residents of Oakland County. The Adaptive Recreation Division provides Therapeutic Recreation programs and services. Our partnerships with more than 30 non-profit agencies, schools and disabled sports organization enables Oakland County Parks to cooperatively provide unique recreation options.

Inclusion services are offered so individuals with disabilities can participate in any program or event hosted by Oakland County Parks. Oakland County Parks encourages and supports the participation of individual with disabilities in all programs.

Five CTRS (Certified Therapeutic Recreation Specialist) staff coordinate programs and assist individuals in participating in all programs. For more information, contact us at doreys@oakgov.com or 248.858.7596

ACCESSIBLE FEATURES AND EQUIPMENT

  Golf – single rider carts are available at all county courses. Please contact the course where you plan to golf 48 hours prior to your tee time to arrange cart availability.

Pedalboats
Hand-operated boats available at Groveland and Independence Oaks

 

Pontoon Boats
In 2008, the Michigan Recreation and Parks Association Foundation and the Access to Recreation Initiative, funded by W. K. Kellogg Foundation, provided matching funds for pontoon boats. The boat is especially suited to provide nature and fishing opportunities for individuals with disabilities.

Waterford Oaks and Red Oaks Waterparks have water transfer chairs available to enable individuals to transfer from a wheelchair and easily access the water.
Seat Canes
Independence Oaks currently has two provisional seat canes available for use. These special canes provide individuals with the opportunity to hike or walk at their leisure, while also allowing them to sit at any point to rest.
 
Picnic Tables - Available at all facilities

Campgrounds - Campsites and cabins with wheelchair accessible ramps

Trailspaved trails at Addison and Independence

ADAPTIVE RECREATION DISCOUNTS

For individuals with permanent physical disabilities or cognitive impairments

Oakland County Parks provides recreational opportunities for all abilities. Please call us at 248.858.7596 so we will know how to serve you better.

Park entry:
Daily Entry Fee -- $4/vehicle, Monday through Friday at Addison Oaks, Groveland Oaks, Highland Oaks, Independence Oaks, Lyon Oaks, Orion Oaks and Rose Oaks
Annual Vehicle Pass -- $28/vehicle.  Valid anytime at same parks.

Camping
$2 discount/campsite at Addison Oaks and Groveland Oaks

Waterparks Admission:
$6/person at Red Oaks or Waterford Oaks Waterparks

BLAZE SPORTS TEAM

BlazeSports Team sponsored by Oakland County Parks and City of Southfield to provide community-based, year-round program for sports for individuals with physical disabilities. Oakland County Parks is a chapter of BlazeSports America which is affiliated with the U.S. Paralympics. 

Disability Groups Cerebral Palsy, Spinal Cord injury, Multiple Sclerosis, Muscular Dystrophy and more. 

Type of sports offered: track events, swimming, field, power lifting, bocce, bowling, goal ball, tennis, golf and more

GOLF CARTS FOR INDIVIDUALS WITH DISABILITIES

This cart provides individuals with spinal cord injuries, amputees and other physical impairments the ability to play golf. The cart features a swivel seat that pivots left and right for maximum activity. The large non-slip wide tires reduce the potential of damage to the fairways.

Carts are available at all of the Oakland County Parks golf courses. Cost is equivalent to a 2-seat golf cart. Call the course 24 hours in advance to reserve.

EVENTS FOR INDIVIDUALS WITH DISABILITIES

Wheelchair Daze at Independence Oaks, the Warren Orlick Golf Outing at White Lake Oaks and Adaptive Golf Lessons in Southfield are just a few of the many recreation options for individuals with developmental or physical disabilities. 

Social events for individuals with development disabilities are offered at various locations, including Clawson, Ferndale, Madison Heights, Royal Oak, Southfield and Waterford.
