CAMPING

Camp Wilderness now open at Independence Oaks County Park near Clarkston.

Organized groups, such as scouts, churches, day camps, etc., can camp overnight seven days from April - November. Special arrangements can be made for winter camping.

Surrounded by a wooded area and open field, the campground features two group areas accommodating up to 160 campers. Amenities include six platform tents (each sleeps four), two pavilions for meals and group activities, water, electricity, showers, restrooms, grills, picnic tables, fire rings and benches.

Campers have access to the nature center, trail system and (in season) beach and boating.

May 16 - October 19

WATERPARKS

Both waterparks open May 24. Hours are 11 a.m. - 7 p.m., based on lifeguard availability. During the month of July, the waterparks are open until 8 p.m. daily, weather permitting.

Red Oaks, in Madison Heights, offers a wave-action pool and a triple-flume waterslide plus "Splashtown", which includes a river ride, splash zone and children's water playground. In addition, there are picnic areas, a sun shelter, concessions, bathhouse with lockers and showers, and more. Special group rates and birthday party packages available. Call 585.6990.

Waterford Oaks, in Waterford, named Best Waterworld by Detroit Monthly Magazine, includes The Big Bucket (children's water playground), Ragin' Rapids (515-foot-long group raft ride), The Wave (Michigan's first wave-action pool) and the Slidewinder (double-flume waterslide). Amenities include volleyball courts, picnic areas, concessions and bathouse with lockers and showers. Special group rates and birthday party packages available. Call 858.0918.

June 16
Swim lessons begin - Two-week sessions offered for beginning to advanced swimmers of all ages. Private lessons now available. Register at the waterpark.

September 7
Bow Wow Dog Swim, noon - 4:55 p.m. Red Oaks Waterpark, Dog only swim. Contests and prizes. Check in: 11:30 a.m.- 3:30 p.m.  $10/dog, includes parking, swim session, contest entry and tote bag for owner. Dogs may register for one 55-minute time slot, determined by weight. Registration form available online. September 13

May 23
Oakland County Parks Mobile Units "hit the road." Outdoor "entertainment on wheels" rentable units include portable climbing tower, inflatables, dunk tank, in-line skate mobile, puppet shows and more. Call 858.0916.

Through Aug. 7
Walk Michigan/Walk Oakland!  Visit an Oakland County Park this summer and walk for a chance to win a trip for two to Mackinac Island this Labor Day weekend (as well as weekly drawings and prizes). Download the walk forms or pick one up at the park's contact station. After each walk, drop them off at any Oakland County Park to enter the drawing. Walks should be at least 1 mile in length, and forms must be submitted no later than August 7 to be eligible for the grand prize trip. Details: Contact Melissa Prowse at: prowsem@oakgov.com or 248.858.4611.

Fourth Annual Ride the Rose-Wildflower Poker Ride, Rose Oaks County Park. Fundraiser for Headwaters Equestrian Friendly Trails. On-site registration: Noon-1:30 p.m. $20 donation to register. Aug. 29 - Sept. 1
Chrysler Arts, Beats & Eats, Pontiac, 4 p.m. Friday through 8 p.m. Sunday.  Celebrating its 11th year, the festival offers more than 200 performances on eight stages, a juried fine arts show, local restaurants and regional and local attractions.  An ITC Greenways initiative encourages fairgoers to leave their cars behind and walk or bike to Pontiac via one of the Oakland County Trails.  More trails info.  Oakland County Parks will have a booth at the event, with trail maps available.  Visit www.artsbeatseats.com for event details.

Lake Orion Pumpkin Launch, 10 a.m. 4 p.m., Orion Oaks. Teams will compete in Michigans largest pumpkin launching contest. The event is officially licensed by the World Championship Punkin Chunkin Association. Award certificates will be presented to winners in each age division. Open to the public. Registration fee: $25. Scout Leaders
Both the Wint Nature Center and Lyon Oaks Nature Center offer Badge Days which fulfill requirements for various scout badges. A ratio of one adult per five scouts is required. Space is limited and pre-registration is mandatory. Call for details, costs and availability. No refund

ATTENTION Jr. Girl Scout Leaders!
The Ellis Barn Festival will be held Oct. 4, 2008 from 1-4 p.m. at Springfield Oaks County Park. It centers on an 1884 antique barn. Lots of activities will occur including horse-drawn hayrides, barn tours, crafts, farm animals, pioneer toys, antique tractors, mini barn dance and more! These activities will help in several badges including Local Lore, My Heritage, Dance and Folk Arts. Admission is only $5 per car! Join us for an afternoon of fun and learning. Questions? WINT NATURE CENTER PROGRAMS

All programs take place at the Wint Nature Center, Independence Oaks County Park. Pre-registration is required; call 248.625.6473. A trail walk is often part of the program, so please dress for the weather and trail conditions.

June 14
Story Time in the Garden,10-11a.m. As the flowers and herbs start to bloom in the Jean Rubach Sensory Garden, come and join us!  A naturalist will read a story or two, and then make a themed craft at the Hoo Hoo Shelter. A drink and snack are included, so come and join us for story time!  $2/ person.

June 21
Butterfly ID 101, 1:30-3 p.m. Butterflies are wonderful to watch, but they also serve as important habitat indicators. Information about local populations of butterflies is an important tool in protecting natural areas. Oakland County Parks participates in the annual North American Butterfly Count and surveys butterfly populations within the parks.  Learn how to ID butterflies and how to participate in  butterfly surveys within the parks. Bring a pair of close focusing binoculars if you have them. Suited for upper elementary school children - adults. This workshop is a practice session for North American Butterfly Association Count on June 28.  $2/person.

June 28
Go Green Campfire, 7:30 - 9 p.m. Bring your whole family and gather round the campfire for some conservation fun!  Enjoy a green snack and make a green craft. Learn all about eco-friendly choices by competing in the super market sweep. $2/person.  Prepay to register.

July 15 - 17
Uck, Muck, and Yuck Mini Class, 1:30 - 4 p.m., each day. Back by popular demand! This class is for kids ages 6 -10 who want to be grossed out by nature. Day 1:  We will learn about nature myths and some believe it or not animals.  Day 2:  Get your hands dirty and look at some creepy crawlies. 
Day 3:  Discover and make creations that are slimy, smelly, and gooey.  Each day enjoy a hike, snack and more.  $40/child/three days or $15/child/day. Prepay to register.

July 20
River Loop Hike, 2 - 3:30 p.m. River Loop Trail is the newest trail at Independence Oaks. Join a naturalist as we cross the Clinton River and hike on a beautiful boardwalk through the floodplain. Please be prepared to hike about a mile. Meet at the Camp Wilderness parking lot. $1/person. Prepay to register.

Tuning Your Tot into Summer
Tots 3 - 6 years old, along with an adult friend, are invited to explore nature through stories, songs, games, a hike, craft and snack. This summer session will focus on INSECTS! Please make arrangements for older and younger siblings.  $4/tot. Prepay to register.

August 9
Petal People and All Things Small, 1:30 - 3 p.m. Join the naturalist in the nature centers sensory garden as we take a closer look at all things small! Perhaps catch a glimpse of a petal fairy. We will read a book and enjoy a snack, along with other activities. Make a petal fairy of your own to take home! $2.50/person. Prepay to register.

August 16
Native American Campfire, 7:30 - 9 p.m. This evening campfire program will focus on the first Americans. Enjoy stories, a craft, snack and a visit from a special guest. Bring bug spray and a blanket! $2/person. Prepay to register.

August 23
Summer Star Party, 9 11 p.m. Look up at the summer night sky during this star studded evening that includes a cast of characters including, Scorpio, Lyra and Aquila. The Nature Centers starlab (portable planetarium) will ensure good star viewing. The Oakland Astronomy Club provides telescope viewing, weather permitting. Suitable for school-age children and adults.  $2/person.  Prepay to register. 

September 6
Wander into the Wetlands - Canoe Exploration, 10 a.m. - 12:30 p.m. Cattails, beaver lodges, turtles and more to explore. Enjoy paddling the waters of Crooked Lake while learning to identify wetland plants and animals during this naturalist-guided program. Join us for a snack and marsh soup making. Appropriate for school-age children and adults with some previous canoe experience. Meet at the Boathouse. Life vests mandatory, equipment provided. $4/canoe - paid the day of the event. $2/person. September 13
Step into Nature, 2 4 p.m. Lace up your hiking shoes and join a naturalist for a guided hike to discover facts about Michigan plants and animals, along with some of the parks history. In addition, make a lovely stepping stone to take home and place in your garden. $1/person (+) $5/stepping stone.  Prepay to register.

September 20 
Invasive Plants Problem Solving Natural Resources Education Program,10 -11:30 a.m. Non-native plants can grow aggressively and out compete native species. The end result is that invasives are rapidly changing native landscapes and negatively impacting natural communities. Learn about these invaders and what YOU can do to prevent their spread. This program is suited for upper elementary school children and adults.  $2/person. Prepay to register.

October 4
Ellis Barn Festival Springfield Oaks County Park, 1 4 p.m. Join us for an afternoon of good old fashioned fun. There will be a horse drawn hayride, barn dance, antique tractors, crafts, farm animals, barn tours, antiques and more! $5/vehicle, payable at the gate.

Biketerpretation, 10 - 11:30 a.m. Explore the Huron Valley Trail on a bicycle with a naturalist. We will stop periodically along the way to view plants and animals that we encounter. Dress for the weather. Beverage will be provided. $1/person.

June 28
Butterfly Count, 10 a.m. - 3 p.m. Join staff and other volunteers as we conduct our 5th annual butterfly count. As changes occur in the park, the butterfly count will monitor the impact of those changes on the butterfly population. Dress for hiking off the trails, bring water, sunscreen, close-focusing binoculars and lunch. Free, with the option to pay $3 to North American Butterfly Association.

July 15, 16, 17    
Summer Camp, 10 -11:30 a.m., ages 6 8; 2 4 p.m. ages 9-12. Birds of Prey Hawks, owls, falcons and eagles will be discussed through crafts, mounts and activities.
Modern Archeology learn the basics of an archeological dig by discovering items left behind by previous inhabitants of Lyon Oaks County Park and piece together their life styles. Bring hat, gloves, sunscreen and dress for getting dirty. CSI Wildlife Exploring the natural world is similar to the work of CSI. Clues left behind by animals will be investigated to discover who was there, what were they doing and when were they there. Dress for the trail. Cost: $3/student/class. Pre-registration required. 

July 26,
Bug Day Bonanza, 1:30 3 p.m. Meadows at Lyon Oaks are full of insect life in mid- summer. Inside the nature center learn about the benefits of insects and techniques to capture them. Outside, use sweep nets to capture your own insects, examine your catch and then release them to live out their lives. Dress for off the trail activities. Sunscreen suggested. Cost: $1/person.

August 9,
Recycle Crafts, 1:30 - 3 p.m. Learn what items are being made from recycled materials and then make some crafts from recycled materials. Cost: $2/person.

August 23
Dog Park Pooch Program, 10 noon. C.J. Bently from the Michigan Humane Society and specialist in dog behavior will join dog owners in the Lyon Oaks Dog Park to explain behavior of visiting dogs. Bently will provide insight on analyzing behavior between dogs and a dogs relationship with people. This program will provide valuable information for any dog park user. Free with park entry permit.

September 6,
Wacky Water, 1:30 - 3 p.m. Water is one of the Earths many fascinating materials and is essential for life. People have used its special properties to live better lives through machines and recreation. Join us for a class of activities and information on a hot summer day. Prepare to get wet. Cost: $2/person.

September 13
Monarch Tagging, 1 - 3 p.m. Help scientists in their continuing search for information about the monarch butterfly by joining in this tagging program offered by Monarch Watch out of the University of Kansas. First learn why this is such a special butterfly, learn how to capture them in nets and then visit the meadows to catch and tag individual butterflies. Dress for off the trail activities. Bring water and sunscreen. Cost: $1/person.

NATURAL RESOURCES EDUCATION PROGRAM

June 28
Annual Butterfly Count, Golden Preserve and Independence Oaks, 10 a.m. - 1 p.m. The North American Butterfly Associations butterfly count will be held in two locations this year! This count helps to track butterfly populations and reveal important information about the geographical distribution and population size of each species counted. This count will start at Oakland Land Conservancy's Golden Preserve and continue at Independence Oaks at 1 p.m. (Meet at Camp Wilderness parking lot.) September 20
Invasive Plants Problem Solving, 10 11:30 a.m., Wint Nature Center, Independence Oaks. Invasive plants are spreading throughout the country. October 18
Bittersweet Busters, Orion Oaks Dog Park, Lake Orion, 10 a.m. - 1 p.m.  Join Oakland County Parks stewardship staff members to help remove oriental bitterswwet from on of the few forested areas within the Dog Park. Oriental bittersweet in a non-native vine that twines into trees and forms a thick wall of vegetation that smothers other plants. Be prepared to pull, cut and get dirty. Parking permits will be provided to workers along with gloves, water and snacks.

SUMMER DAY CAMP PROGRAMS

These summer camps are offered through the Oakland County Parks Recreation Department. Advance registration is required. Contact your local parks and recreation department for fees and registration.

 Camp Details

Wild Adventures Camp, (ages 6 -13), Monday Friday, 9:30 a.m. 3:30 p.m., Independence Oaks. Wild Adventures Camps explore the outdoors on foot, by bike and by boat! This camp is a playground for cycling, swimming, climbing, fishing, pedal boating, stargazing and making friends! Go techno-green with geocaching (a GPS scavenger hunt) and eco-arts & crafts. On Friday, enjoy a relaxing campfire picnic and a trip to Waterford Oaks Waterpark for some much needed cooling off!  Camp dates & registration information.

Wild Adventure Extreme Camp (Ages 11 15). Monday Friday, 9:30 a.m. - 3:30 p.m., Independence Oaks. Campout at Independence Oaks Camp Wilderness on Thursday night.  Wild Adventures EXTREME includes all the fun of Wild Adventures Camp plus canoeing, backpacking, shelter building and outdoor survival skills. Campers will go river paddling on the Clinton River and campout overnight at Camp Wilderness on Thursday as they learn firebuilding, campfire cooking, and camping skills.  Camp dates & registration information.

Junior Counselor Program (ages 14 & older). Oakland County Parks Junior Counselor program is looking for ambitious and energetic young people looking for a challenging, rewarding experience and a chance to contribute their unique ideas. Experience as a day camp junior counselor will give opportunities to learn and develop the skills you'll need for your future - skills like problem-solving, critical thinking, leadership, teamwork, teaching and creativity.  Camp dates & registration information.

Watercolors Paddling Trip, 10 a.m. 4 p.m., Independence Oaks County Park.
Enjoy the fall colors while kayaking or canoeing on Crooked Lake. Bring a lunch for the floating picnic.
 
November 8
Geocaching Turkey Run, 10 a.m. 4 p.m., Independence Oaks County Park.
Poker Run turkey style. Find the hidden containers and select one sealed card from each turn them in and see how if the cards form a turkey. Prizes 1st 3rd  places.

Through Aug. 7
Walk Michigan/Walk Oakland!  Visit an Oakland County Park this summer and walk for a chance to win a trip for two to Mackinac Island this Labor Day weekend (as well as weekly drawings and prizes). Download the walk forms or pick one up at the park's contact station. After each walk, drop them off at any Oakland County Park to enter the drawing. Walks should be at least 1 mile in length, and forms must be submitted no later than August 7 to be eligible for the grand prize trip. Details: Contact Melissa Prowse at: prowsem@oakgov.com or 248.858.4611.

Walk Michigan/Walking Works. Take a walk in Oakland County Parks and earn a chance to win a trip to Mackinac Island and the Labor Day Bridge walk. Oakland County Parks is promoting walking to residents as a way to get healthy and fit through the Walk Michigan/Walking Works state program.
