Waterford, Michigan -- International travelers to Detroit Metropolitan Airport can now get Oakland County's economic development and quality of life story in six different languages at the touch of a finger.

"This effort furtherance of our goal to reach out to the international business community and tell them we’re open for business in Oakland County, Michigan," County Executive L. Brooks Patterson said.

The new 10-minute video plays on kiosks located in the McNamara and North terminals. Flags from China, the United States, Germany, Italy, Japan and Korea, are displayed on the video touch screen. At the touch of the screen, travelers can listen to the presentation in the chosen language.  The presentation is closed-captioned in English. Patterson gives the opening and closing to the video.

"Oakland County leads the region in direct foreign investment," Patterson said. "By telling our story to an international audience, we hope to continue that investment, which means high-paying jobs for our workforce."

When the entire program is not playing, a continuous loop gives interesting facts about Oakland County to entice visitor into stopping at the kiosk. The McNamara kiosk is located in the baggage claim area near the escalator. The North Terminal kiosk is on the north side of the building inside the security screening area. The county's award-winning Prosper magazine is also distributed at the kiosk and in various locations throughout the terminals.

Patterson and a team of economic developers from Oakland County recently returned from a trade mission to Italy, Germany and Greece. Several successes are expected to be announced within the coming months, said Irene Spanos, director of the Department of Economic Development & Community Affairs.

More than 700 foreign-owned firms from 37 countries have 900 business locations in Oakland County. Japan and Germany comprise 43 percent of all foreign-owned business locations in the county.
