Nearly 150 third- and fourth-graders will join Oakland County Executive L. Brooks Patterson at Waterford Oaks county park for the kick-off of the ninth annual Count Your Steps pedometer walking and nutrition program to fight childhood obesity. The students will begin counting their steps during a walk at the park with Patterson and Oakie the Squirrel, the Oakland County Parks and Recreation mascot. The students will also encounter various activity stations, such as bouncers, field games and fitness exercises.
Since the program's inception, over 173,000 third- and fourth-graders have participated and walked more than 16 billion steps, or 321 times around the earth.
