Pontiac, Michigan -- Take off for the Oakland County International Airport (OCIA) Open House and Airshow 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. this Sunday in Waterford. Admission is free; but there will be a $5 per vehicle parking fee for the first time in order to support the costs associated with the acrobatic air show.
"The airshow is becoming a more prominent feature of the open house," said J. David VanderVeen, Oakland County's director of central services. "The forecast looks good so bring the entire family for a fun-filled day."
This year's airshow will feature Susan Dacy barnstorming in her 450 horsepower Super Stearman "Big Red"; Doug Dodge and his Machaira, a "One of a Kind" Muscle Biplane that will perform aerobatics, and Erik Edgren (aka Hobie Washburn) will perform "Aerial Antics" in his 1939 Taylorcraft "T-Clips." The airshow begins at 2 p.m.
Flight enthusiasts can go into the wild blue yonder in a historic B-25 Bomber for $400; a 1929 Ford Tri-Motor for $80 (children $40); or take an aerobatic ride in a Pitts biplane for $150. In addition, there will be helicopter rides for $35 and airplane rides for $20.
For those who like to keep their feet firmly planted on the ground, there will be aircraft lined up on the ramp to admire; bounce houses for the kids; concessions stands; and informational booths.
As has been the tradition for many years, the OCIA Open House and Airshow committee will host a pancake breakfast 7-11 a.m. Sunday. The cost is $7 for adults and $5 for kids 12 and under.
The open house is entirely self-funded. It does not receive or spend any county funds. Instead, the open house relies on vendor and advertising fees to help cover its costs. For more information, go to OCIAOpenHouse.org. OCIA is located at 6500 Highland Road in Waterford.
J. David VanderVeen is available Thursday, Aug. 23 for media who wish to interview him in person to preview the OCIA Open House and Air Show. He is available by phone any other day.
