Pontiac, MI, June 7, 2010 - Star Trax DJ and dancer gave Shrine Catholic Grade School winners something to cheer about during an exciting performance for Oakland County Executive L. Brooks Patterson's 7th annual Count Your Steps grand finale event at Shrine Catholic Grade School in Royal Oak.
Count Your Steps was founded by Oakland County Executive L. Brooks Patterson to combat the growing epidemic of childhood obesity in the United States. One hundred fifty energized and very vocal 3rd and 4th graders from Shrine Catholic Grade School were on hand to participate in a wide variety of activities including dancing and games.
Shrine's students walked a total of 52,180,834 steps this year which earned them first place among participating schools for the third year in a row! Green Elementary in West Bloomfield was second and St. Fabian in Farmington Hills placed third. The Walled Lake School District took first place among participating school districts with a total of 158,547,047 steps. Second place went to Avondale and Clarkston finished third. All total, students participating in this year’s Count Your Steps program walked over 1.1 billion steps.
This year over 16,000 students and 125 schools participated in the Count Your Steps program which ran from April 19th – May 16th.
