Pontiac, MI, April 19, 2010 – Oakland County Executive L. Brooks Patterson’s 7th annual Count Your Steps event kicks off today at the Detroit Zoo in Royal Oak. More than 250 third and fourth graders from Shrine Catholic Elementary and Pepper Elementary will join Patterson and Detroit Tigers mascot PAWS to participate in a wide variety of activities including a brisk walk around the zoo.
“Count Your Steps is a remarkable success. It gets young people up from in front of the television and gets them active outdoors,” said Patterson, who founded Count Your Steps in 2004 to combat the growing epidemic of childhood obesity.
Nearly 16,000 students from more than 120 schools have registered to participate in the Count Your Steps program this year which will run from April 19th – May 16th.
Shrine’s third and fourth graders walked a total of 51,426,878 steps last year to take the first place slot. In total, students participating in last year’s Count Your Steps program walked more than 1.3 billion steps. Since the program’s inception, more than 135,000 third and fourth grade students have logged a total of 14 billion steps, or 280 times around the Earth.
