Please contact MSU Extension-Oakland
to answer any of your questions about our Junior Master Gardener Program or call 248-858-0900.
Is there an age limit for children participating in Junior Master Gardener?
The curriculum is geared for 3rd grade through 5th grade but it can be tailored to any age group.
How can I get a copy of the curriculum?
The classes must have Master Gardener volunteer involvement. The leader and student guide are available to any Oakland County certified Master Gardener volunteer.
How does my child get involved?
We do not have scheduled Junior Master Gardener classes.
If you are interested in having your child involved, you'll be asked to gather a group of children together to form a class (10 is a reasonable number) and we will solicit Master Gardener volunteers to help lead the classes.
Contact Carol Lenchek
at 248-858-0900 if you are interested in forming a Junior Master Gardener group.
Is there a cost?
Yes, we suggest you charge at least $5.00 per child. You will have to pay $2.00 for each name badge that will be awarded to the Junior Master Gardener once their volunteer hours are completed. We always suggest a snack at each class and there are supplies that may need to be purchased for each topic.
How long is the course?
It's usually run as a 6-week class; once a week for 1 1/2 hours. Each week a different topic is taught. The topics are plant science, soils, water, insects, diseases and volunteering.
Is there a volunteer component?
Yes. Each child must complete 10 hours of volunteering to become a Junior Master Gardener. We can give you guidance on appropriate volunteer sites.
Do I need to register my Junior Master Gardener child group with your office?
Yes, prior to the program starting the names and addresses for the youth participating must be on record.
