How do I exchange a non-working machine?

If your machine is not functioning properly, call the library and we will send another machine via mail, or you can bring in your machine and we will have a new machine waiting for you. To return by mail, use the packing material your machine was originally sent in, or wait for the arrival of the new machine, and use that box to return the defective equipment.

What if I'm not receiving my cassette books?

If you notice books are not arriving the way they normally do, call us immediately. Do not wait! We rely heavily on patron input since each patron's record is not checked daily. When you call us, we can check various aspects of your record, determine the cause, and fix whatever is causing the delay in delivery.

Why do I get books I didn't order?

Patrons can call in specific books titles or authors at any time. However, the titles you requested might be in great demand and all copies could be be checked out, so those books are placed on a waiting list for you.

When you first signed up for the service, you marked reading interests on your application. Unless otherwise specified by the patron, we allow the computer to create a book list that matches those subject interests. Then, when you are due for books, if your requests are unavailable, the computer sends out selections from that list. In other words, if we do not create this list, and books you asked for are not in, you will not get any books at all! The reading categories are fairly broad in order to accommodate a variety of interests. We realize that you may not like all the books sent, and you are not obligated to read them -- just turn the card over and send them back, and new books will be sent out to you.

What if I sent a book back and forgot to include one of the tapes?

If you can, please call the library and let us know which book is missing a tape. You can also return the tape by placing it in another book container if there is room. Mark it in some manner -- use a note, or wrap something around the strap on the outside of the container (string, rubber band, yarn, etc.) This lets us know to check the book for problems, and we can remove the extra tape and place it back in the appropriate book box.

What causes the tapes to play too fast?

First, you want to check two buttons on your machine to make sure they are in the correct positions. With the machine facing you (play buttons closest to your body), there is a panel of five additional controls to the right of the play buttons. The first control from the top of the panel is the Variable Speed Control. Make sure this sliding control is pushed all the way to the left. The second control down is the Speed selector. It can be pressed down to the right or to the left. Library tapes are played at 15/16 speed, which is the left position (the right position plays commercially recorded tapes at a faster speed, and if the switch is in that position your tapes will play too fast.)

If the controls are in the correct positions, and the tapes are still playing too fast, the problem may be static buildup. When played for extended periods of time, static builds up on the tape, and upon changing sides, causes the tape to misfeed through the player and the tapes play too fast. Remove the tape from the machine, and rap it sharply against a hard surface several times. Replace the tape, press the rewind key for a moment, press stop, press the fast forward key for a moment, then stop. Press play to continue. If the problem persists, contact a library staff member to assist you.

How do I request specific books?

Call the library, use the order forms included with each catalog, write requests down on a piece of paper and mail them, or fax to us at 248-858-9313. E-mail the library by using the Submit Requests link located in the left navigation toolbar of our home page.  DO NOT send requests inside book containers, as they may be lost in transit or we may miss them.

What if a title I want hasn't been recorded?

The library takes all patron requests and suggestions for future recordings. Periodically, these are compiled and submitted to the National Library Service for consideration. This information is kept in our 'Wish Box', and when titles are selected and assigned a book number by NLS, they are placed on your request/reserve list, and will be sent when book copies are received.

Why do I receive series books out of sequence?

Our circulation system does not have a component that tracks books in chronological order. If you want to receive books in a specific order, please call and request them as you want them.
