Oakland County Historical Commission, Birmingham Historical Museum and Baldwin Public Library Birmingham to host Hanging By A Thread: Care and Conservation of Your Textiles workshop on April 8, 2006.
Please join these three institutions in attending this free public workshop and tour. The program will begin at 9:45 AM at the Baldwin Public Library located at 300 W. Merrill in downtown Birmingham, Michigan with a lecture demonstration presented by Conservator Frances Faile in the Library's Jeanne Lloyd Room. Faile will offer tips on storing, maintaining and repairing your prized family textile heirlooms such as quilts, wedding dresses and other historic garments. She will provide free handouts and advice on the general care for textiles. At 11:00 AM the participants will break and take a short walk to the nearby Birmingham Historical Museum & Park, located at Maple Road (15 Mile) and Southfield, to tour the First Ladies of Fashion exhibit, a collection of reproduction gowns worn by 14 wives of the US Presidents including Martha Washington, Eleanor Roosevelt, Pat Nixon and others. Faile and other museum staff will lead tours into the museums collection storage areas to review how textiles are cared for.
