Communicable Disease/HIV Services

Oakland County Health Division Office of Substance Abuse Services (OSAS) provides training for treatment providers in Oakland County about HIV/AIDS, STD's (Sexually Transmitted Diseases), and other communicable disease issues.  The following courses are offered:

Communicable Disease/HIV: Level II

Dates: October 14, 2011; December 7, 2011; January 5, 2010; March 29, 2012

Goal
This workshop provides participants with facts, techniques and resources that will enable them to accurately communicate information to their clients.  Participants will also be taught alternatives to reduce their clients' risk for CD/HIV.

Objectives

  • Identify the connections between substance abuse & CD/HIV
  • Identify barriers that prevent staff from addressing CD/HIV with clients
  • Describe transmission, symptoms & disease progression of CD/HIV
  • Identify community resources
  • Become familiar with an effective infectious disease screening assessment tool

Women's Issues

Goal
Participants will examine the impact that substance abuse and HIV infection have on women.

Objectives

  • Identify risk factors and statistics for contracting HIV
  • Identify unique challenges to women in treatment and recovery
  • Identify triggers to relapse and preventative strategies
  • Identify factors leading to non-compliance

African Americans, HIV/AIDS & Substance Abuse

GOAL: 
Participants will learn how to reduce barriers to services for African Americans who are substance users and/or HIV infected.

OBJECTIVES:

  • Identify cultural values within the African American community
  • Discuss how stigma/discrimination affect the spread of HIV in the African American community
  • Identify three possible causes of health disparities in the African American community

This training provides participants with facts, information and resources about sexually transmitted infections (STIs), Hepatitis and TB.

  • Identify the connections among substance abuse, STIs and TB
  • Describe the disease progression, treatment and prevention of common STIs and TB
  • Identify precautions clients can take to avoid STIs and TB
  • Become familiar with an effective infectious disease screening assessment tool

Adolescents, HIV/AIDS & Substance Abuse

Participants will expand their knowledge and skills in developing and implementing prevention programs most likely to succeed with adolescents.

OBJECTIVES: 

  • Identify common behaviors that are a part of physical, cognitive or psycho-social development exhibited during early, middle and late adolescence
  • Identify adolescent behaviors that put them at risk for HIV and substance abuse
  • Describe risk assessment & reduction strategies
