Oakland County Water Testing Services


Residential Wells

The Oakland County Health Division offers a free service of testing well waters for bacteria, fluorides, chlorides, nitrates, nitrites and sulfates for Oakland County residents.

Residents can pick up bottles at any of the three offices listed below:

  • Pontiac Office 1200 N. Telegraph Rd, Building 36E, Pontiac, MI 48341
  • Southfield Office  27725 Greenfield Rd, Southfield, MI 48076
  • Walled Lake Office 1010 E. West Maple, Walled Lake, MI  48390

Samples may be returned to the Medical Care Facility (lab), or any of the three office locations.  Drinking water samples must be dropped off during the following hours

  • Medical Care Facility/Pontiac Office:
    Monday - Wednesday 8:00 a.m. - 4:30 p.m.
    Thursday Only: 8:00 a.m. - 3:00 p.m.
  • Walled Lake/Southfield Office:
    Monday - Wednesday 8:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m.
    Thursday 8:00 a.m. - 9:00 a.m.

(Note: Samples exceeding the 24 hour time limit for testing are unreliable and will be discarded.  NO SAMPLES will be accepted on Fridays or the day before a holiday.) 

All samples MUST have accompanying paperwork in order for the lab to analyze them.  For multiple bacteriological sampling events, you may fill out the following form online, print it out and submit with your samples.

Other types of water testing, such as lead arsenic, hardness, etc. can be tested by the Michigan Department of Environmental Quality (MDEQ). Call 517-335-8184 for information and bottles. (There is a small fee.)

If residents prefer to use an environmental laboratory, please check to verify they are certified by the Michigan Department of Environmental Quality (MDEQ) for the tests that you are requesting.

Surface Water

The Oakland County Health Division offers a free service to Oakland County residents for testing surface waters for E.Coli Bacteria. Bottles can be picked up at any of the three offices Monday through Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Surface waters must be returned to the Medical Care Facility Laboratory by 12:00 p.m. (noon) on Wednesday.

Water sample results will be reviewed by the environmental health staff and results returned to residents with proper filing of paperwork.

Swimming Pools

The Oakland County Health Division offers a free service of testing swimming pool waters for Standard Plate Count and E. Coli for facilities in Oakland County.  Bottles can be picked up at any of the three offices Monday through Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.  Samples may be returned to the Medical Care Facility (lab), any of the three office locations, or specified drop off sites.  Swimming pool samples must be dropped off during the following hours:

  • Medical Care Facility / Pontiac Office
    Monday-Tuesday: 8:00 a.m. - 4:30 p.m.
    Wednesday only: 8:00 a.m. - 3:00 p.m.
  • Walled Lake / Southfield Office
    Monday-Tuesday: 8:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m.
    Wednesday only: 8:00 a.m. - 9:00 a.m.
