Flu shots are available at these Health Division Offices (Pontiac, Southfield & Walled Lake).
If you pre-registered to attend one of the October 27th flu shot clinics and could not attend, visit one of our office clinics to recieve your flu shot.

What is the cost of flu shots?
Flu shots are $7.00.
Only cash, Medicare and Medicaid is accepted.

Who can get a flu shot?
In general, anyone OVER THE AGE OF SIX MONTHS who wants to reduce their chances of getting the flu can get vaccinated. However, certain people should get vaccinated each year. They are either people who are at high risk of having serious flu complications or people who live with or care for those at high risk for serious complications.
People at high risk for complications from the flu, including:

Children aged 6–59 months.

Pregnant women.
-
People 50 years of age and older.
-
People of any age with certain chronic medical conditions.

People who live in nursing homes and other long term care facilities.
People who live with or care for those at high risk for complications from flu, including:

Household contacts of persons at high risk for complications from the flu (see above).

Household contacts and out of home caregivers of children less than 6 months of age (these children are too young to be vaccinated).

Healthcare workers or people who live with or care for those at high risk for serious complications.

Does Medicare/Medicaid cover the cost of flu shots?
Yes. Medicare (part B) and Medicaid can be billed to cover the cost of flu shots. Make sure to bring identification, preferably photo ID, with current address and all insurance cards.

What should I bring to the flu shot clinic?
Always bring photo identification (drivers license or state issues ID card), cash, and all insurance cards to any of our flu shot clinics.
Bring wheelchairs or other assistive equipment and language translators if needed.
Wear a short sleeve shirt or roll your shirt sleeve to expose the top of your arm.

Who should not get a flu shot?
Flu vaccine is not recommended for people who are allergic to eggs or flu vaccine; had a serious reaction to flu vaccine in the past; or have a fever.

When is the best time of year to recieve the flu shot?
In October or November, however, December and January are not too late to ensure adequate protection against the flu.

Can I receive a pnuemonia shot?
OCHD administers pneumonia shots year-round at our Pontiac, Southfield and Walled Lake offices during regular office hours. The cost is $9.00. Medicare (part B) and Medicaid covers the cost of pneumonia shots. Our nurses can determine if you should receive a pneumonia shot. Pneumonia shots are recommended for:
- Individuals 65 years and older
- Residents of nursing homes or care facilities
- Those with chronic illnesses or who have immunosuppression.
Usually the pneumonia shot is not given yearly.

Does this flu vaccine protect against the Avian Flu?
No. There is currently no vaccine that protects against the Avian Flu.

What else can I do to prevent the flu?
- Cover your mouth and nose with a tissue when coughing or sneezing
- Wash your hands often
- Avoid touching your eyes, nose and mouth
- Avoid close contact with people who are sick
- Get plenty of exercise
- Eat healthy food
- Drink plenty of water
- Get plenty of sleep
