Local educational agencies (LEAs) play an integral role in protecting the health and safety of their district's staff, students and their families. Taking the necessary steps to be prepared for an event such as a pandemic, can help save time and lives.
Planning and Coordinating
Identify the authority responsible for activating the district's pandemic flu response plan
As part of the district's crisis management plan, address/create pandemic flu preparedness involving all stakeholders
Delegate responsibilities for key stakeholders involved in the planning
Work with Oakland County Health Division to coordinate with their pandemic flu plans
Incorporate students with special needs into the pandemic flu planning
Implement an exercise to test your pandemic flu plan
Continue Student Learning
Develop plans to address the potential impact of a pandemic flu on student learning (e.g., student and staff absences, school closings and extracurricular actives)
Develop alternative procedures to assure continual student learning
Develop continual operations for central office functions including payroll and ongoing communication with students and parents
Infection Control Polices
Work with Oakland County Health Divisions to implement effective infection prevention procedures to help limit the spread of germs at school
Provide sufficient supplies (e.g., soap, alcohol-based/waterless hand sanitizer, tissues and garbage cans, etc.)
Establish policies and procedures for sick leave of staff and students
Communication Plans
Assess and review communication plans
Develop a plan to communicate with staff, students and families including picking a spokesperson
Include all language, culture and reading level appropriateness in public messages and printed material
Advise staff, students and family members to seek reliable pandemic flu information from Oakland County Health Division and federal and state health sources
