Frequently Asked Questions About Hazardous Materials and Household Waste

What is household hazardous waste?

Household hazardous waste is any product known to cause adverse effects to humans or the environment. These include items that are ignitable, corrosive, reactive or toxic. Some of the most common household hazardous products are cleaners and aerosols, paint, varnish and thinners, herbicides and pesticides, along with batteries and automotive fluids.

Where do I take my household hazardous waste?

Oakland County government currently does not operate a drop-off collection service for household hazardous waste. A few local communities offer this service, but they are very limited. Calls concerning household hazardous waste can be made to any of our three Health Division offices or the Michigan Department of Natural Resources & Environment (MDNRE) at 517-335-2690 or Oakland County Waste Resource Management Division at 248-858-5656.

The Southeastern Oakland County Resource Recovery Authority (SOCRRA) takes a wide variety of household hazardous waste products in small quantities from member communities without charge. You can visit their drop-off center at 991 Coolidge Highway in Royal Oak. SOCRRA is not affiliated with Oakland County Government. People using this facility must live in one of the following communities.

  • Birmingham
  • Clawson
  • Ferndale
