Medical Main Street’s Work force: Educated, Innovative AND Motivated

  • More than 40% of Oakland County residents have college degrees (national average is about 26%)
  • Oakland County has the third highest number of high-tech workers in the nation and twice the corporate R&D professionals compared to the national average
  • Michigan is home to 15 public universities, 60+ independent universities and colleges, and 30 community colleges
  • More than 124,000 college degrees were conferred in Michigan last year – this represents 4.3% of all degrees granted in the United States
  • The number of master's degrees granted in Michigan were more than two and one half times the national average
  • Close to 1,500 Ph.D.s are granted in Michigan every year – almost twice the national average
  • Michigan is third in the nation for the number of engineering degrees issued (last year 6,032 engineering degrees were granted)

Life Sciences Education
in K-12 Grades:

Part of Oakland County’s Emerging Sector Program includes a summer camp program at Oakland County’s Intermediate School District (Career-Focused Education) that allows K-12 students to gain exposure in the biotech and medical device industries. Students that participate in these programs learn about the many careers available to them in the life sciences world. They also understand the importance of math and sciences in these emerging technology careers.
