November 19, 2003 is the fifth annual GIS Day. GIS Day is a world-wide, grassroots event that formalizes the practice of geographic information systems (GIS) professionals and opens their doors to schools, businesses, and the general public so that real-world applications of this important technology can be showcased. GIS is computer software that links geographic information (where things are) with descriptive information (what things are). Unlike a flat paper map where "what you see is what you get," a GIS can present many layers of different information.
The event is principally sponsored by the National Geographic Society, the Association of American Geographers, University Consortium for Geographic Information Science, the United States Geological Survey, The Library of Congress, Hewlett-Packard, Sun Microsystems, and ESRI. As part of this years GIS Day celebration, Oakland County will host a map gallery in the One Stop Shop and provide free map products during regular business hours (9 a.m. to 4 p.m.).
