Disasters can strike at any time, anywhere. Oakland County Emergency Response and Preparedness develops and coordinates programs for natural, technological, national security and nuclear emergencies/disasters affecting Oakland County. This involves:
Mitigation: Eliminate, reduce or prevent long-term risk to human life and property from natural and man-made hazards.
Emergency Preparedness: Advance planning for an emergency that develops operational capabilities and facilitates an effective response in the event an emergency occurs.
Emergency Response: Action taken immediately before, during or directly after an emergency to save lives, minimize damage to property and enhance the effectiveness of recovery.
Recovery: Short-term activity to return vital life support systems to minimum operating standards and long term activity designed to return life to normal or improved levels.
Prepare for response and recovery to emergency or disaster situations.
Provide resource information.
Develop and conduct Emergency Operations Center (EOC) exercises.
Plan and exercise for hazardous materials incidents.
Maintain facility hazardous materials reports for emergency response and Community Right-To-Know.
Support volunteer amateur radio operators, an organization that provides emergency communications and volunteer assistance for many activities including disaster response, severe weather spotter networks, etc.
Provide and maintain training equipment for citizens and first responders.
Oakland County Citizen Corp/CERT program to promote involvement of private citizens, business groups, civic organizations and schools in homeland security and integrated emergency management.
During a disaster, over 34 agencies operate from our Emergency Operations Center. Emergency Response and Preparedness staff can be reached 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, for response to such incidents as terrorist attacks, severe weather/tornado touchdown, floods, hazardous materials incidents, industrial accidents and more.
Emergency Response and Preparedness also serves as the headquarters for the Local Emergency Planning Committee (LEPC) for SARA Title III and maintains Tier II reporting and site plans of local industries with hazardous substances.
