Pontiac PD, Oakland County launch community policing site

The Pontiac Police Department, in conjunction with Oakland County's Courts and Law Enforcement Management Information System consortium, Wednesday launched a Web-based community-oriented policing program that will give citizens an expanded voice in fighting crime. The new Pontiac police site, www.pontiacpolice.com, provides maps with pinpoints detailing recent crime activities, updated weekly. These local crime statistics are being made available online to residents for the first time. Officials said the site aims to give citizens more information and improve communication between local neighborhood watch groups and the Pontiac police. By providing information online, the department also hopes to reduce the number of officers assigned to answer routine telephone inquiries, putting more officers back onto street patrols.
