Protecting the Interests of Housing Consumers


Oakland County Community & Home Improvement Division housing counselors protect the interests of housing consumers by providing free comprehensive housing counseling on a wide variety of issues including:

  • Mortgage default and foreclosure prevention and resolution
  • Property tax foreclosure remedies
  • Reverse mortgage counseling to help seniors afford to stay in their home and maintain quality of life
  • Landlord and/or tenant rights such as obtaining needed rental unit repairs, return of security deposits, budgeting, eviction, complaints, etc.
  • Homebuyer education to prepare homebuyers for the responsibilities of homeownership
  • Resources and referrals to help low income and disabled households locate affordable housing
  • Fair housing complaint referrals
  • Down payment assistance for first time homebuyers
  • Low interest home improvement loans

The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) has designated the Division as a professional HUD  approved housing counseling agency and provides federal funds to help county residents find solutions to their housing concerns.
