Oakland County Waste Resource Management sent over 500 letters to public and private Oakland County schools this summer, inviting them to participate in the new Michigan Green Schools Program. This exciting hands-on program teaches students ecological responsibility, making them stewards of natural resources.
“We are hopeful that many schools throughout Oakland County will seize this opportunity to involve their students in activities that will teach them environmental stewardship,” said Oakland County Waste Resource Management Environmental Program Coordinator Whitney Calio.
The program lists 20 activities promoting energy savings, recycling and other environmentally friendly practices. For a school to receive Green School designation status it must participate in ten of those activities. These activities include:
Recycle paper, batteries, cellular phones and printer cartridges
Energy saving commitments, audits and classroom education
Provide access to current print and non-print ecological materials
Establish a birdhouse habitat project
Adopt an endangered species and post a picture of that animal in a main traffic area
To participate, schools complete an application and return it to the Waste Resource Management Division by April 2, 2008, for review. Once approved, a school receives Green School designation, is presented with a certificate. A recognition ceremony to honor all participating schools is planned for spring 2008.
