Celebrate Downtowns with Main Street Oakland County

No man needs a vacation so much as the man who has just had one.
- Elbert Hubbard

Summer is upon us.  Many of us have returned from a relaxing vacation, only yearning for more time away from our usual responsibilities. Main Street Oakland County (MSOC) has created an opportunity to escape from it all, and  experience our local downtowns.  From August 2-5, local communities are celebrating their uniqueness and inviting residents to “Do It Downtown.”

Village Mall Downtown Farmington.jpg Located throughout Oakland County, the 12 Main Street communities are  as diverse as the people who visit them.   Shoppers will delight in the variety of boutiques, antique stores, art exhibitions and galleries.  For the freshest produce, flowers and hand-made items visit the farmers markets.  Many downtown districts also offer a wide variety of dining options including tasty bakeries, sidewalk cafes, coffee houses, international cuisine and fine dining.

MSOC is an economic development program, specifically targeted to provide technical assistance to the 30 traditional downtowns in the County. These historic commercial districts each have a unique sense of place which, as a part of a national trend, are becoming increasingly popular as places to do business, shop, dine, live and experience family activities.  Oakland County is a partner with the National Trust's Main Street Center, a program of the National Trust for Historic Preservation.  To date, MSOC has created 2,800 jobs and generated more than $404 million dollars in investment for the participating communities.
