Oakland County Arts & Culture Department Awards MCACA Regional Minigrants of $11,000 to Aid Local Cultural Projects

The Oakland County Office of Arts & Culture has announced grants local cultural institutions totaling $11,000.  Grant dollars are from the State of Michigan through the Michigan Council for Arts and Cultural Affairs (MCACA) Regional Regranting program. As one of only 19 regranting agencies in the state, Oakland County  recognizes exemplary programs that encourage locally developed, high quality arts projects to Great Lakes Chamber address local arts needs and increase public access to the arts.

A wide variety of project ranging from school residencies to community performances were awarded grant funding. Notable projects include: 


  • The Hindu Temple Rhythms of Michigan dance group perfromed at the Bharatiya Temple.  This event marked the conclusion of the month-long cultural celebration of Navaratri in October.
  • Expanded programming for First Night Birmingham by Cultural Council of Birmingham Bloomfield.  New this year is the “Countdown to First Night,” starting December 15.
  • Deaf Community Advocacy Network (DeafCAN!) is developing a Sign Choir for elementary aged school children.
  • Detroit Chamber Winds & Strings is sponsoring the visit of two composers to meet with the composition students of Southfield-Lathrup High School’s Arts and Communication Academy.
  • Great Lakes Chamber Music Festival is adding a new venue, the Christian Tabernacle Church in Southfield, to their schedule.  The performance will be held in March 2008.
  • Restoration of the William E. Scripps Estate’s wrought iron gate attributed to American master metalworker Samuel Yellin.  The work will be conducted by Michigan blacksmith, Bob Becker.  Local high school students will have the opportunity to watch his work, and filmmaker Scot Orser will document the project.
  • Stagecrafters, community theater of Royal Oak, will offer American Sign Language (ALS) interpreted performances for the 2007-08 Main Stage season.


The office is accepting grant applications for artsBaldwin Theatre in Royal Oak and cultural projects that take place from April 1 through September 30, 2008. The application deadline is February 1, 2008.  Non-profit organizations, schools and local government units located in Oakland County are eligible to apply for funding.

Grant guidelines and application form are available on-line at www.artsoakland.com and at the Oakland County Office of Art & Culture. Applicants residing in counties other than Oakland should contact the office for the location of their MCACA regranting agency.
