Government Fast Facts
COUNTY GOVERNMENT
- Oakland County has sixty-one cities, townships, and villages within its borders, in addition to twenty-eight public school districts, each of which holds regular elections.
- Oakland County holds elections every four years in conjunction with U.S. Presidential elections for County Executive, Prosecutor, Sheriff, Clerk/Register of Deeds, Treasurer, and Drain Commissioner. Elections for the twenty-five member Board of County Commissioners are held every even-numbered year in November.
- County elections for twenty-four Circuit Court judges are held in conjunction with other elections depending on the specific term of the judgeship. Elections are held as needed for thirty-five District Court judges in sixteen different districts within Oakland County.
STATE GOVERNMENT
- The state of Michigan holds elections for Governor, Lieutenant Governor, Secretary of State, Attorney General, and the thirty-eight member State Senate every four years in conjunction with U.S. Presidential elections. Each office has a constitutional two-term, or eight-year term limit.
- The 110-member Michigan House of Representatives is elected every two years, with a constitutional three-term, or six-year term limit.
- Oakland County wholly contains thirteen House Districts in addition to part of a House District shared with Livingston County; Oakland County also wholly contains four Senate Districts in addition to part of a Senate District shared with Genesee County.
FEDERAL GOVERNMENT
- Michigan has fifteen districts in the 435-member U.S. House of Representatives that are elected every even-numbered year in November, and two U.S. Senators elected in accordance with the U.S. Constitution every six years.
- Oakland County wholly contains one U.S. House District, the 9th Congressional District, and shares the 12th District with Macomb County, the 11th District with Wayne County, and a portion of the multi-county 8th District.
- Every ten years, after the decennial U.S. Census, the Michigan Legislature re-draws federal and state legislative boundaries to reflect changes in population.
