City of Southfield - Footing Drain Disconnection Program

City of Southfield Home

Introduction

Within the City of Southfield, there are groups of homes that have experienced basement backup problems. Many of these have been the result of wastewater backing up from the sanitary sewers through basement floor drains, especially during periods of heavy rainfall. This wastewater presents a potential health risk and can cause damage to the structure and to belongings stored in the basement. To help address the basement backups, as well as Sanitary Sewer Overflows (SSOs), the Oakland County Water Resources Commissioner and the City of Southfield have partnered to implement a Footing Drain Disconnection (FDD) program. FDD takes place in individual homes and reduces the volume of storm water entering the sanitary sewer system.
