Rouge Public Education Committee

Representatives throughout the Rouge River Watershed have been working to develop education and outreach materials for use within Oakland County Rouge River Watershed.

The Rouge-Oakland Public Education Committee was formed in 1999 to coordinate public education activities throughout the County. The Committee included representatives from the WRC, Southfield, Troy, Farmington Hills, Birmingham, Beverly Hills, West Bloomfield Township, Bloomfield Township, Auburn Hills, as well as other entities, such as Southeast Oakland County Water Authority (SOCWA), Friends of the Rouge (FOTR), Wayne County Department of Environment and the Rouge Program Office.

The committee was awarded grants to conduct public outreach activities, which included procurement of materials, spear-headed the installation of watershed signage, developed 30-second Public Service Announcements (PSA's) for cable and radio advertising, as well as initiated a Riparian Newsletter for residents who own property along the Rouge River.

The Alliance of Rouge Communities (ARC) was formed in 2003 to coordinate watershed restoration efforts. The WRC participates in the ARC Pubic Education and Involvement (PIE) Committee which coordinates these efforts across the watershed.

The ARC PIE committee has organized on-going events on storm water detention, environmentally-sound design, healthy lawn care and other programming that will promote education of citizens regarding their impact to water pollution.

The group meets regularly to plan and coordinate activities.
