Illicit Discharge Elimination Program
The Oakland County Illicit Discharge Elimination Program (IDEP) is a key component of Oakland County's National Pollutant Discharge Elimination System (NPDES) Phase II Storm Water Permit . The goal of IDEP is to reduce the amount of pollution to the lakes, streams and the five main rivers that flow throughout Oakland County (the Clinton, Flint, Huron, Rouge and Shiawassee).
IDEP focuses on the elimination of improper connections to the storm drain system, elimination of illegal dumping into storm drains and minimizing the amount of seepage into the storm water system from the sanitary sewer system and septic systems.
To meet this goal, Oakland County has formed a Storm Water Action Team (SWAT). This team is charged with performing an initial dry weather inventory of all county outlets to rivers. This inventory includes the following activities:
We all know that what we flush down the toilet ends up at the waste water treatment plant. What people don't realize is that things that are dumped into storm water catch basins and drains go directly to our lakes and rivers without treatment. These are the same lakes, creeks and rivers that we boat, fish and swim in.
The goal of IDEP is to eliminate the discharges that are harmful to both people and the environment.
