If you receive a summons to appear for jury duty you will be required to report to the 52-4 courthouse, 520 West Big Beaver Road, in Troy at 9:00 a.m. on your scheduled jury selection day.  Please mark the date on your calendar and advise your employer that you have been called for jury duty.  No trials are held on this date, just jury selection.  Jury selection should last no longer than 12:00 p.m..

If you are selected to sit on a jury, you will be informed on the jury selection day of the date and time of the trial, which is typically during the following week.  A jury trial usually lasts one to two days, but may last longer.


Why we need you as a Juror:

Being a Juror is a vital part of our justice system.  It is the duty of each American citizen to serve jury duty when called.  It is a responsibility that should be taken seriously.  Just as you would want to have a fair and equitable jury for yourself or someone you love, every other citizen is entitled to the same.  Your participation in our legal system as a juror is the cornerstone of our justice system.


How Jurors are selected?

The Oakland County Jury Commission forwards the questionnaires that you previous completed.  The Jury Commission sends the questionnaires to the proper jurisdictions.   We then choose randomly from these questionnaires.


How a jury is chosen?
The Oakland County Jury Commission chooses prospective jurors from random computer selection by driver's license number. The questionnaire that you previously filled out from this random selection is then forwarded to the proper jurisdiction. Prospective jurors are randomly selected from these questionnaires for jury duty.


How a Jury is chosen for a Jury Trial:
Each prospective juror is chosen from a blind draw. Each prospective juror is then interviewed by the defense and prosecuting attorneys to determine if they will be chosen as a juror.


Responsibilities of a juror:

  • Bring your summons with you
  • Be on time
  • Dress appropriately
  • Know your mileage from your residence to the court
  • Arrange for your own child care during your jury term
  • Arrange for your transportation to and from jury duty
