Oakland County, Michigan, April 27, 2006 -- Kids attended a Board of Commissioners meeting, hung out with a sheriff's drug dog and got a chance to vote on one of the new voting machines used across Oakland County.

But one of the most popular events for the sons and daughters of Clerk/Register of Deeds' employees was the chance to talk with some local veterans.

In crisp military regalia, the veterans solemnly posted 'the colors' at the start of the Board of Commissioners meeting. Later, they talked with the children about flag etiquette and gave them hands-on experience in properly folding an American flag.

The World War II, Korean War and Vietnam veterans were touched by the kids' enthusiasm.

About 40 children, ages 5 to 17, attended the day-long celebration.

"Our employees give so much of themselves to their job and to the people of Oakland County," said Ruth Johnson, Oakland County Clerk/Register of Deeds. "This was a chance for their kids to learn what an important role their parents play while at the same time learning a little about county government and our operations."

In addition to spending some time with their parents for lunch, the kids got a chance to meet "Kelo", an Oakland County Sheriff's drug dog who demonstrated his ability to sniff out illegal substances. "Can he smell water?", "Can he smell milk?" and "Who cleans up the dog poop?" were questions fielded by Kelo's partner, Deputy Dan White, who smiled and acknowledged that clean-up is part of his job.

Other activities included a tour of the Oakland County Treasurer's Office, the Legal Division and Deeds and a patriotic art contest judged by Daily Oakland Press Executive Editor Garry Gilbert.

Kids also were able to cast their ballots on the new optical scan voting machines now in use across Oakland County. On the ballot? Topics like their favorite meal (dinner), favorite treat (candy followed by brownies) and favorite vegetable (corn was first with peas dead last).
