Ruth Johnson Reminds Voters: Deadline to Register to Vote in May Elections is Monday, April 7
Oakland County, Michigan, Thursday, March 27, 2008 -- Ruth Johnson, the Oakland County Clerk/Register, is reminding residents that the last day to register to vote in the May 6 elections is Monday, April 7.
Voters in the city of Bloomfield Hills as well as nine school districts located within Oakland County will go to the polls, including those in the Clarkston; Clawson; Ferndale; Hazel Park, Lake Orion, Lamphere, Madison, Oak Park and Pontiac districts.
Several "out-county" districts, with portions inside of Oakland County borders, are also having school board elections, including Almont, Clarenceville, Fenton, Goodrich, Grand Blanc, Romeo and Warren.
"I would urge voters to have their voice heard, their vote count by casting their ballot on Election Day," Johnson said. "Oakland County has a proud tradition of voter turnout. It's important that all of our citizens, from new voters to seniors, exercise their right to be a part of the process. Your vote counts!"
To register to vote, applicants must be age 18 by Election Day and be U.S. citizens. Residents may register in person at their local city or township hall or by mail.
Johnson reminded voters that Michigan's new ID requirements continue to be in effect. Voters will be asked for valid photo identification at the polls before they are issued a ballot. Voters who forget to bring ID have the option of signing an affidavit as to their identity. Acceptable forms of ID include: Michigan driver's license; federal- or state-government issued ID; a U.S. passport or military, student or tribal IDs, as long as they include a photo.
Results from the May elections will be posted online at the Clerk's web site at www.oakgov.com/clerkrod. Click on "Elections" to get nearly up-to-the-minute results. As always, results are considered "unofficial" until they are certified by the Oakland County Board of Canvassers, a process which can take up to two weeks to complete.
Oakland County, with a population of 1.2 million, has 883,610 registered voters.
