Citizens Alliance for the Oakland County Probate and Circuit Courts

Purpose

The Citizens Alliance for the Oakland County Probate and Circuit Courts is an organization that was created in 1991 to advance community involvement in the improvement of the court system.  Its members are comprised of a diverse group of dynamic leaders from various public and private agencies, organizations, and businesses.

 

Mission

The mission of the Citizens Alliance is to educate the community regarding Court resources and services.  The Citizens Alliance welcomes the community's input on concerns and issues requiring the Court's attention.  In turn, the Citizens Alliance works toward assisting the Court in making necessary advancements for the enhancement of the public that it services.

SUBCOMMITTEES

The Citizens Alliance Committee is comprised of several different subcommittees that members and the public are welcome to join.  Those committees are as follows:

 

  • Education

Focuses on educating citizens of Oakland County about the judicial system and services provided by the Court.  It also educates the public about available community resources.

  • Community Concerns

Identifies and brings community concerns to the Court's attention.  Children, seniors, and disabled persons are assisted by the advocacy of this subcommittee.

  • Court Development

Assists the Court in the development of community-based programs and court policies, when appropriate.  This subcommittee also assists the courts in identifying resources, solutions to public concerns, and improvements to the functioning of the court system.

  • Membership, Recruitment and Fundraising

Responsible for membership and fundraising activities to assist the Courts with necessary support to carry out its functions.  The Citizens Alliance meets quarterly and subcommittees meet more frequently.  We can always do more with your help!

Removing the Mysteries of Probate Court

Do you need to learn more about probate matters?  Questions regarding wills, trusts, powers of attorney and estate administration will be answered in a dynamic presentation offered by experienced court personnel that will assist you through the complex processes of probate court.  The seminars fill up quickly, so CLICK HERE for dates and times available.

Basic Training for Guardians

Legal guardians are needed for children and adults in situations where a person is unable to care for oneself and/or cannot make legal decisions on their own behalf.  If you are interested in becoming a legal guardian, this training is for you.  The training will provide you with the tools that you need to act on behalf of a loved one.  Trainings are held the second Wednesday of each month and are open to the public.  CLICK HERE for upcoming training dates and location.

Basic Training for Conservators

Conservators are needed to assist a protected individual with managing their affairs.  Accountings are required to be filed with the court by those appointed as a conservator.  Training in regard to what to do and when to do it is critical to serving in the capacity as a conservator.  An experienced attorney is available to present information and answer questions about the duties of a conservator.  Trainings are held the first Wednesday of each month.  CLICK HERE to confirm current locations and times for this "must attend" seminar.

Speakers Bureau

The Citizens Alliance is comprised of many experienced professionals dealing with a variety of matters.  In order to share our experience, the Citizens Alliance has created a Speakers Bureau.  If your organization, agency or business would like a guest speaker at its next event, call 248-681-1200 to seek our assistance.  If you don't see a topic of interest, please feel free to let us know about any other topic or need and we will try to accommodate your request.  All you have to do is ask and a member of the Citizens Alliance will attempt to assist you with making the necessary arrangements for your event.

Juvenile Court:  A Reality Check Videotape

The Citizens Alliance has developed a teaching tool in order to familiarize children and their families with the Juvenile Court.  This videotape is available to schools and other community groups interested in viewing what it's like to be involved with the Juvenile Court.  To order a copy, call 248-858-0296.
