Circuit Court Internships

Oakland County government encourages the placement of college interns at a variety of sites and locations.  Generally, an intern is defined as a college student of junior or senior standing who wishes to receive academic credit or experience in their chosen field, and receive professional training on a part-time basis.

Paid and academic internship opportunities are available at Oakland County during all semesters of the year. In order to work at the court you must apply through the County.

Academic and Experiential Interns

Students interested in an internship experience with the court should contact the Intern Coordinator for Oakland County, David Van de Grift, 248-858-0538, or send a resume and cover letter to him at Oakland County Personnel, 1200 North Telegraph Road, Pontiac, Michigan, USA, 48341-0440. Mr. Van de Grift will personally discuss your internship goals with you and how Oakland County might best fit them. You should indicate upon interview that you are interested in working at the court.

Paid Internships

If you are currently enrolled in Oakland University, a paid internship should be explored. First complete an application at Placement & Career Services, 158C West Vandenberg Hall.  Then review the various internship opportunities available.  Current paid internships available at Oakland County Circuit and Probate Courts include:

  • Juvenile Casework Assistance at Royal Oak and Walled Lake offices. (Social Science degrees)
  • Youth Community Service or Juvenile Detention work.  (Social Science degrees)
  • Circuit Court Administration at the 6th Circuit Courthouse.
  • Employability skills program at Friend of the Court.

Paid interns usually enjoy a 2-4 semester stay in their department, which allows the benefit of a greater in-depth exposure to the student's chosen field. In general, self- motivated students with good communication skills excel in their internship opportunity.

The County's paid intern program is also available to registered Eastern Michigan and Lawrence Technological University students. Students are welcome to apply for regular County openings once they graduate.

Summer Jobs

Students who are only available to work or intern during the summer months, or who are not enrolled at Oakland University, may be interested in the Summer Job program at Oakland County. Specific summer jobs are available for students of various majors with two or more years of college. Unlike interns, students at a summer job work 40 hours per week for 13 weeks.
