The Oakland Car
The Oakland Motor Car is the predecessor to the Pontiac automobile. Originally an independent company, Oakland became a part of General Motors and was manufactured for a short time under their brand. However, as sales of the General Motors increased, production capacity was shifted over to more economical models. By 1932, the last Oakland was manufactured. The lecture will focus on the early history of the Oakland Automobile Company, its roots in the local carriage trade, and how it became a part of General Motors. Oakland County proudly owns a 1924 Oakland Car and it is currently on display at the Courthouse. Artifacts associated with the Oakland Company, including a 1916 panoramic factory photograph showing the Oakland Motor Car exhibited in the Oakland County centennial parade, will be available for viewing. A post-lecture tour will also be offered should anyone want to view the car for an up close and personal look.
