Pontiac, Michigan (September 9, 2003) -- Oakland County's Office of Arts, Culture & Film is sponsoring an exhibition of print from the DAS Print Co. The exhibition will be on display in the Oakland County Galleria through September 26, 2003. A reception and an opportunity to meet the artists will be held on Thursday, September 11, 2003, from 4:30 p.m. - 6:00 p.m.
A significant force in Flint's artistic community, DAS Print Co., is a group of three local printmakers who collaborate on an exploration of print media to produce limited, hand-pulled editions. Carrying on this tradition begun in 1982 are Carole Brender of Flushing, Stefan Davidek of Flint, and William Stolpin of Holly. Working together on Saturdays for nearly twenty years, DAS members shared ideas and experimented with print media, including relief intaglio, stencil and planographic processes, while working individually in his or her own studio during the week.
These artists are unique in that they do not depend on photographic processes, although they have used them. They prefer instead to use the time-honored glue and tusche and paper stencil methods in order to sustain a more painterly approach to screen-printing. Translucent, transparent, and opaque inks are carefully chosen to develop the color fields in each print. With over fifty color runs in a typical DAS screen print, it is not unusual to find thousands of perceived colors. The DAS artists have their work in numerous public and private collections throughout the United States.
The Oakland County Galleria is located on the second floor of the Executive Office Building 34 East, 1200 North Telegraph Road in Pontiac. The Galleria is open from 9:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m., Monday through Friday. Admission is free.
