Walled Lake School District Captures Top Honors in 2007 Count Your Steps Program
Farmington Hills, MI, May 2, 2007 – Walled Lake was the top performing Oakland County school district in the 2007 Count Your Steps pedometer walking program, which saw more than 22,000 3rd and 4th grade students walk a total of 1.3 million steps.
During the month-long event, Walled Lake Elementary School students walked a total of 215,667,548 steps. They were followed by the Troy School District with 156,345,759 steps and the West Bloomfield School District with 70,605,369 steps.
The announcement of the top performing schools districts, schools, classrooms and students was made at St. Fabian Elementary in Farmington Hills which finished first among all participating schools.
As the first place school, St. Fabian students were treated to a high energy, rousing interactive performance by Radio Disney singers and performers.
Finishing second and third respectively behind St. Fabian were Shrine Catholic Grade School in Royal Oak and St. William Catholic School in Walled Lake.
St. Fabian also had three of the top performing classrooms in the program and Shrine had two.
The names of students who walked a total of 390,000 steps or more were placed in a raffle for the first place prize of an iPod portable jukebox. Students who walked between 260,000 and 389,999 steps were in the running for the second place prize of a Detroit Tigers ticket package. Those who compiled between 130,000 and 259,999 total steps had an opportunity to win the third place prize of a game package that includes interactive toys and games.
The top three schools will receive a Count Your Steps banner to display and the superintendents, principals and teachers from the winning schools and school districts will be honored at a dinner hosted by Patterson tonight at the Capitol Grille in Troy.
