Brown Bag Lecture Presentation by Olympic Gold Medalist and State Representative, Hayes Jones
Pontiac, Michigan – January 16, 2007 - The Office of Arts & Culture presents a lecture by Hayes Jones, on January 18, 2007, from noon to 1:00 p.m. in the Oakland County Lecture Hall.
Hayes Jones holds the Olympic Gold Medal for the 110-meter hurdles from the 1964 games in Tokyo, Japan and the Olympic Bronze Medal in the same event from the 1960 games held in Rome, Italy. Upon returning home from the 1964 Olympic Games, he donated his Gold Medal to the City of Pontiac in the hope that it would inspire youth to achieve their dreams. Pontiac named a recreation center in his honor. "Throughout his entire life Hayes Jones has not only demonstrated his extraordinary athletic prowess but he has also served as a role model for young people by showing them what can be accomplished through hard work dedication and sacrifice," L. Brooks Patterson said. The Detroit Free Press selected Mr. Jones as one of the favorite 100 Michigan sports figures from the 20th Century. He is the honorary chair of the 2007 and 2008 Michigan Senior Olympics.
Hayes Jones, former Oakland County Director of Economic Development and Community Affairs, was elected to the office of Representative in State of Michigan Legislature, for the partial term ending January 1, 2007.
The presentation is Thursday, January 18, 2007, from Noon to 1:00 p.m. in the Oakland County Lecture Hall, Building 49 West on the county campus at 1200 N. Telegraph Road, in Pontiac.
