Hayes Jones Announces Resignation as Oakland County Economic Development & Community Affairs Director

Pontiac, MI, March 14, 2006 -- Oakland County Executive L. Brooks Patterson today announced Hayes Jones' resignation as the director of the Oakland County Department of Economic Development & Community Affairs.  Jones is leaving to run as a Democrat for State Representative in the 29th District which includes Pontiac and Auburn Hills.

"Hayes Jones is a truly outstanding individual who has brought great value to Oakland County and its citizens," Patterson said.  "During his time with us, Hayes worked tirelessly to attract national and international companies to Oakland County that will enhance the area's economic climate and serve as a catalyst for new job creation. Should Hayes be elected by voters in the 29th District, they will be well-served by a man of his talent and ability."

Jones joined Oakland County in 2000 as a senior business development representative in the Planning and Economic Development Division.  He took a three year leave of absence in 2001 to join Automation Alley where he worked to manage a $1.2 million grant to introduce small and mid-sized businesses to the global marketplace.

A series of trade missions Jones arranged to China, Germany and Mexico resulted in $22 million worth of signed contracts for local companies. It was the overwhelming success of the China trade mission which prompted Patterson to appoint Jones deputy director of Economic Development & Community Affairs in October 2003.  The U.S. Department of Commerce called the China trip the best trade mission in which it ever participated.  As a result, the Commerce Department cites the China trade mission as the model for other organizations to follow.

In January 2005, Jones was promoted to the position of Director of Economic Development & Community Affairs where he played a major role in attracting new Emerging Sector companies to Oakland County.

"This has been a very rewarding experience," Jones said.  "It's given me an opportunity to make a difference and to work with some very talented people who are committed to Oakland County's success."

Jones admitted that it was a very difficult decision to step down, but felt it was one he had to make in order to move to the next level in his career.  Jones says it is a huge sacrifice, but one worth making.

Jones was an internationally renowned world class athlete in the late 50's and early 60's. He won the bronze medal at the 1960 Olympic Games in Rome and then he came back four years to win the gold medal in the 110 meter hurdles in Tokyo.

Jones and his wife, Rhonda, whom he married in 2003, live in Pontiac.  Jones has two adult children and three grandchildren.
