Oakland County Shares E-Government Success at International Conference
Phil Bertolini, Director IT, Oakland County presents best practices for online government
Pontiac, Michigan (April 6, 2004) -- Phil Bertolini, Director of Information Technology for Oakland County will conduct a live video teleconference with the Marcus Evans Website Content Management for Government conference held today in Canberra, Australia. The teleconference will begin with a videotaped introduction by Oakland County Executive L. Brooks Patterson, describing the features that make Oakland County a great place to live, work, and play. Mr. Bertolini will speak about Oakland County's successful use of a Content Management System to make government services available on the web.
The Marcus Evans Website Content Management for Government conference spotlights the practical experience of leading-edge government agencies and public organizations. The long-standing drive to reduce costs and increase efficiencies in business is now spreading to government. Innovative use of technology is proving to be the fastest, best way to increase customer satisfaction, even in the competition-free arena of governmental service. As more people gain access to the Internet, studies show that they prefer to conduct business online. Today, more than half of all Michigan households have a computer, according to a recent Michigan Cyber-State report.
It's no wonder that savvy public servants are turning to the web and eGovernment to satisfy their constituents.
In terms of technology-based services, Oakland County is far ahead of the curve. Mr. Bertolini's success in leading the county's eGovernment initiative has already captured national attention, and now international governments are taking notice. The National Academy of Public Administration, Joint Center for eGovernance issued Oakland County an eGovernance Award of Distinction, while the county's website was named as a Best of the Web finalist by the Center for Digital Government. At today's international conference, Mr. Bertolini will provide insight on the role of content management in Oakland Countys groundbreaking eGovernment programs.
Oakland County's website provides the ability to:
- Pay for traffic tickets
- Order birth, death, and marriage certificates
- Buy park passes
- Order property and planning maps
- Download forms for business startups, professional certification registration, Circuit and District Courts, Friend of the Court, and more
Online payment of taxes is soon to come.
Mr. Bertolini and his team at Oakland County's Information Technology Department are busy developing new eGovernment offerings every day. Their mission is to use technology creatively to give their customers businesses, citizens, local governments and employees instant access to government information and services at any time and from anywhere. Visitors to Oakland County's website at www.oakgov.com download an average of nearly 17,000 individual files, applications and forms each month. This saves citizens an incalculable number of time-consuming trips to a government office, and saves taxpayers in excess of $2,000,000 a year a figure that's sure to rise as Oakland County eGovernment initiatives expand to include even more online forms and new applications.
