Pontiac, MI, October 1, 2008 Rochester Hills resident Brian Sell, one of the top road racers in the world, will be among thousands of runners who have signed up to run Sunday's Brooksie Way Half Marathon and 5k races.
Oakland County Executive L. Brooks Patterson will present a proclamation to Sell from State Senator Mike Bishop, R-Rochester, honoring Sell for his achievement in the Beijing Summer Olympic Games where he finished 22nd overall. The event will take place Thursday at 10:30 a.m. in the Conservatory of the Royal Park Hotel, 600 East University Drive in Rochester. Patterson will also update the media on the race registration, including the wheeler division and the number of teams who have entered the Corporate Team Challenge. The original goal was 2,000 runners.
Race credentials will be available Thursday for media who plan to cover Sunday's races, which begin at 8:00 a.m. near the corner of Walton and Adams roads at the campus of Oakland University. There are a limited number of seats for media who wish to ride on the press truck that will lead the runners on the half marathon route.
The 13.1 mile race is named in honor of Brooks Stuart Patterson, who died after a snowmobiling accident in 2007. The county executive had announced plans for a half marathon in his 2007 State of the County address several weeks before the accident.
The Crim Fitness Foundation, which is partnering with Oakland County as race sponsors, has hosted the Crim Festival of Races in Flint for more than 30 years. It is one of the leading road races in the United States.
