Final Two Household Hazardous Waste Collections Of The Year To Be Held September 6th And October 4th

Pontiac, Michigan, August 25, 2008 - Residents of the North Oakland Household Hazardous Waste (NO HAZ) communities have two more opportunities to get rid of their household hazardous waste this year. The final two collections of the year will be held on Saturday, September 6th and Saturday, October 4th. The September 6th collection will be held at the Oakland Community College Highland Lakes campus in Waterford. The college is located at 7350 Cooley Lake Road, at the corner of Cooley Lake and Hospital Roads. The collection will take place in the parking lot at the north end of the campus. Residents should use the entrance that is on Hospital Road. The October 4th collection will be held at the Orion Commerce Center, 315 W. Silver Bell Road in Orion Township. The facility is located on the south side of Silver Bell Road, west of M-24.  Both collections will be held from 8:00 AM 2:00 PM.

The collection is open to residents of Addison Township, Brandon Township, Commerce Township, Groveland Township, Lake Angelus, Lake Orion, Leonard, Oakland Township, Orion Township, Ortonville, Oxford, Oxford Township, Rochester, Rochester Hills, Waterford Township, White Lake Township and Wolverine Lake. Residents of other communities should contact their city, village or township office for disposal options.

The NO HAZ program is a free service for residents of member communities; however, donations are accepted. The NO HAZ Consortium encourages residents to gather all of their household hazardous waste and attend one collection event per year, as the communities are charged for each car that attends the collections. Residents of NO HAZ communities dont have to register or make an appointment. They simply fill out a registration form for billing back to the individual communities. The registration form is available at the collection and at www.nohaz.com, where it can be downloaded and filled out ahead of time.

Items collected at the NO HAZ events include: household paints and stains, antifreeze, gasoline, kitchen and bath cleaners and polishes, mercury and mercury thermometers, aerosols, pesticides, herbicides and computer and electronic equipment. For a more comprehensive list of accepted materials, or for additional disposal information, visit the NO HAZ website at www.nohaz.com, or call the NO HAZ Hotline at 248-858-5656.

NO HAZ is a consortium of 12 Oakland County communities representing 17 local governments that offer residents a safe and environmentally responsible way to dispose of household hazardous waste. Its goal is to provide residents with a regular, reliable and easily accessible collection service. Over the last six years, residents of almost 11,500 households have participated in the program and over 766,000 pounds of hazardous materials have been collected and recycled or properly disposed of.  If you are interested in volunteering at one of the NO HAZ collection events, please send an email to wrmd@oakgov.com. The NO HAZ Consortium would like to thank Oakland Community College and Ashley Capital for their support of the program.
